About 40 minutes from the centre of Hamilton the heavens opened and I swear the ducks on the river looked like they were at risk of drowning! It was the 31st of December and I had things to buy maps to print so I had a short but manic afternoon. Went for a lovely Thai green curry with Kalei who I met at the hostel and that was my New Years eve.
This morning 1st of January I awoke to more pouring rain. So instead of walking on I opted for a rest day. Some roads on the North Island are closed due to flooding. During the next few days I should be crossing streams – but it will be impossible if the rain persists. Come rain or shine I will set off tomorrow.

Happy New Year! It is good to hear you have been offered such hospitality over Christmas. You have certainly had some challenges. Hope that rain settles down soon and those river crossings are passable and you don't need to practise for the bull dodging olympics any more!
